The greatest highlights of Jason’s professional career are at the heart of Camp Olympia’s vision and mission.
Jason began his career as a high school English teacher, varsity tennis coach, and assistant soccer coach at Greenwood High School. After only his second year of teaching he was named Teacher of the Year for Greenwood Public Schools.
At 25, Jason founded CHALK (now a part of Bay Area Community Resources), a nationally recognized youth employment and youth development nonprofit serving San Francisco, Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. In 1998, CHALK’s flagship program, Youthline, was featured in the book Local Heroes: Changing America for its unique approach to transformative youth employment.
Over the course of a decade from 2002 to 2012, Jason founded two college preparatory public schools: KIPP Summit Academy and KIPP King Collegiate High School in San Lorenzo, CA. Today KIPP Summit is a National Blue Ribbon School and 2019 California Distinguished School. KIPP King Collegiate High School is perennially ranked among the highest performing high schools in California and nationwide by US News and World Report and was recently named a 2019 California Distinguished School. Jason served as the founding principal of both schools.
Notably, Jason is also a former Fulbright Scholar and a 2009 recipient of the Jefferson Award for Public Service.
But, it all started at camp….
Jason’s passion for working with children and families over the years can be traced directly back to summer camp. His experiences as a camper inspired him to become a CIT and then a camp counselor at sleep away camp. Working as a counselor at Greene Family Camp in Texas and Four Winds Westward Ho! on Orcas Island cemented his love for working with kids and his belief in the power of “camp magic”.
Jason founded Camp Olympia to bring a little of that magic and summer camp fun back to the community his family calls home.
They say you can accomplish almost anything in life as long as you don’t mind who gets the credit. We owe a deep well of gratitude to Decathlon Sports Club in Woodside, CA and the Buddie family. Camp Olympia is profoundly inspired by and borrows heavily from the incredible camp they own and run. Our own two boys have attended Decathlon Sports Club for the past four years even after we moved to the East Bay two years ago and the drive to camp extended from 10 minutes to an hour and a half each way. Our boys willingly make the drive because they love Decathlon so much. We launched Camp Olympia with the hopes of bringing something that magical to our own community.
The Buddies and the entire Decathlon staff have been extremely generous with their time, spirit, and expertise as we have launched Camp Olympia. They are the original and the best and we are humbled to be reaching toward their phenomenal example and extremely high bar.
“Camp Olympia believes in building character and emphasizing the joy in sports for all kids. It fills a huge need in the East Bay. . .what a great vision.”
“Jason has been a leader in youth development in the Bay Area for decades. Camp Olympia combines fun, sports, and character development in a way that kids adore and parents marvel at.”
Thanks for your interest in Camp Olympia.
It is with very heavy hearts that we have decided not to open Camp Olympia this summer due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
As parents ourselves, we share your agonizing desire to give our own kids a summer filled with all of the amazing things Camp Olympia is designed to provide: joyful, fun-filled sports and games; forever friendships; lifetime memories; tons of opportunities to practice and build character strengths that come from teaming with peers and trying new things; and, last but certainly not least, close relationships with well-trained, amazing counselors.
We will deliver all that and more… in 2021! We hope you will join us then!
Feel free to hang out and learn all about Camp OIympia and provide your email address below so that we can reach out to you when we open registration for 2021.
Be well and stay safe.
